gear stick is just flopping about

I drive a Nissan qashqai 07 reg and my gear box has just gone two questions:- 1. Should this happen on a car of this age? 2. Roughly how much would it cost to repair? The gear stick is just flopping about and there is no gears

If the shifter is just flopping around, check the linkage to make sure it isn't disconnected.

Thanks for you reply I have had that looked at and it is defintelybthe gearbox I wish it wasn't lol
