Been hearing a growl ( sound that a power steering pump makes when low on fluid) when engine is on for about 2 weeks now. I had a mechanic take a look at the vehicle and he said that the power steering pump was indeed going bad. On today I stopped at a drive thru to get some food and the vehicle shut off and wouldn't restart. After letting it sit for about 10 minutes it started up. Approximately one mile later it shut off again while sitting under a red light. I cut off the AC and the car restarted and ran until I got home (approx. 5 miles) I cut the AC back on and the car shut off again. I initially thought that maybe there was a fuel pump problem but now I don't know. I am stumped and need some help.

It sounds like the AC compressor is locking up and killing the engine. Most likely, that is what you hear and not the PS pump. Try running the engine without the AC and see if it every shuts down.

Let me know what you find and let me know if the check engine light is staying on.
