My car was not wanting to start yesterday, so I asked onstar to run a diagnostic on it and they said that there is a problem with the fuel control system. It is not reading correctly. My engine light is also on now and I cannot start my car? How much will this problem probably cost me?

Between $20.00 and $2000.00 but it could be more or less.

First the cause has to be diagnosed so we have some clue of what service or repair is needed. Any mechanic would start by reading the diagnostic fault codes. Onstar is just a real expensive way of someone doing that for you. They can't diagnose it any better than anyone else sitting in an office building. You can have the same service performed for free at most auto parts stores.

The fault codes will indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis. That's when the cost of the repair can be determined. What we can say is being a GM product, if it is repaired at the dealership you know it will cost double compared to almost any other car brand. Most independent shops can also do the diagnosis and repair but if a new computer is needed, the GM engineers have designed them so they must be purchased new from the dealer and they must be programmed to your specific vehicle by them. That's where things start to get really expensive.
