I bought a mower today and it ran, but the engine was not smooth and the throttle had to be adjusted constantly.I checked the oil and it was overfilled. The oil was new though. I added new oil and it would not start and made a funny noise. He said the gas was old and I added new gas, but didn't drain the old gas.

Just wanted to add to this one I would drain all the gas out and start with all fresh gas. Does it have a carb with a float bowl or does it have a diaphram one? Also have you checked to make sure you have a nice blue spark? Also remove the spark plug and take your finger over the plug hole slowly pull the the engine see if you can get enough suction on your finger to make a nice loud pop noise when removing your finger. If you can your ring's are sealing good.
