Intermittent trouble starting

I recently purchased a 2006 VW Passat, car is in great condition and only had 80,000 miles on it. It runs great, performs well but over the past couple of weeks it sometimes, and not always, takes a few attempts to start. Push the key in it starts, stalls, starts, stalls, then on the third or fourth attempt starts and runs fine. No chugging or sluggishness at all, idles fine, but every once in a while it has this issue. I plan on getting it in to my local VW dealer for it's first oil change, and at the same time have it checked out. Just wondering if anyone knows what this might be.

Scan it for free at the car parts store to see if there are any stored codes. It could be a poor communication between the key and the car (if it has this feature), or a faulty idle air control valve.

His vehicle does not have a idle air control valve.

The problem is your camshaft/high pressure fuel pump. Bring it into your VW dealer ASAP! The longer you drive with a failed camshaft, the more damage you will cause to your engine. With 80,000miles you are within the extended warranty VW just put out for their camshafts.
