Ok it was just when I filled it up with gas when it had a rough start and had to give it gas a few times before it would start, now it is doing it even when I havent it filled it up with gas. I have to give it gas a few times before I can get it to start and then after it is running has a rough idle.

Did you run out of gas?? have the fuel pressure checked. you may have a bad injector, a charcoal canister full of fuel, bad plugs or a bad regulator.

This guide should help

The mass air flow sensor is in the air induction tube. Try cleaning it with the proper electronic cleaner available at the local parts store.

Let me know if it helps.

A 60,000 mile used engine was placed into my 2001 Kia Rio. The only problem at that time, was a rough idle in "PARK". Has gotten a slight roughrt over time.A few weeks after install of engine, codes P1166, P0101, P0301, P0300, P0507, P0304 appeared. I replaced the MAF sensor, & the O2 sensor(Bank 1, Sensor 1), (in the front area, above the cat.)Two weeks later, the MAF sensor has cleared, but, the O2 sensor. Is still showing trouble. As of date, the current codes are P0507, P1166, P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, it still idles rough in "PARK", seems to run better then the old engine, quietter, & smoother !How can I clear these codes(for emissions test), & stop the rough idle? Also, gas mileage has decreased by 2 mpg, over the seven weeks.

I would start with a compression test to verify the motor condition. I would replace the plugs and possibly the coils if they have burn marks around them

After the missfire codes are gone, I would clear the codes and drive it and see what returns.

UPDATE -- I have replaced several gaskets. Since then, all codes except P1166 have disapeared(this is the second O2 sensor installed in three months).P0101 has now appeared, I installed a third MAF sensor. The car still idles rough in PARK. After I picked the car up, the check engine light was off. Ten minutes later the check engine light came back on. The reader showed 1 fault, & 1 pending.(P1166 & P0101 P )It appears that once the car reaches a certain temperature, the check engine light will come on, & idle rough at the same time. The O2 Sensor & MAF are after market sensors. CAN THAT BE THE PROBLEM? PLEASE HELP ! A few days later the check engine light goes back out. What does PENDING mean?

Hello, I have been having trouble with what seems to be the same problem for some time now. I bought this car about eight months ago and was told it always started hard if left outside (I live in Manitoba, Canada so this seemed only natural in our winters). I have a heated garage so this was not a problem. But I did find that it started hard after sitting outside in only moderate cold for just a couple hours (it has a newer strong battery in it).
Also, I noticed that it did not get nearly the gas mileage it was meant to get. Since then the gas mileage has remained poor, it still starts rough, but now the acceleration is constantly terrible. It takes a full mile to get to 100 km/hour (60 mph).
Also, on two occasions the car has refused to go past 45 k mph. One of these occasions was after I went through some mud on my road, and the other was a after driving in a torrential rain. When this happened, the car would not rev extremely high, it would simply bog down and refuse to go faster. I have also noticed it is especially sluggish in high humidity.
The other symptom that I have suspected might be related is a loss of breaking. It is not that I lose my breaks altogether, I will just have to stomp them pretty good. This problem comes and goes from one stop to the next, but it does seem to happen when the car is feeling particularly sluggish.
I have replaced the spark plugs, the wires, the ignition coil, the throttle body gasket (it had come apart and needed replacing), the o2 sensor, and cleaned the MAF sensor. For a time I thought I might have water in my tank so I put in gas-line antifreeze. It did seem to help with the rough starting for a time, but I wonder if it was a placebo affect. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts rent it. also check for a vacuum leak.

Fuel pressure was good (48psi, but there was a small leak in the guage which I have to imagine cost a few more pounds of pressure). I checked for vacuum leaks and couldn't find anything (I sprayed with carb cleaner around all the hoses and connections). I did come up with 9 codes: (P0501, P1166, P0303, P0138, P0121, P0325, P0304, P0300, P0102). Thoughts?

Three of the codes I see are misfires if you can get those fixed then others may go away. But with misfires it's best for a mechanic to take care of them for the cheapest option otherwise you can spend a ton in parts that are good to fix it and it can be a major engine problem as well. MAF sensor is one of the codes as well so it may be bad, cleaning doesn't do much at all for a maf as they are self cleaning anyhow. 501 is a speed sensor problem but if engine doesn't run right neither will trans so some of these can be false codes or a weak battery as well.

My car ran hot about 3 weeks ago. I had the water hose replaced and all the fluids replaced. When I tried to start it, it wouldnt so I had the spark plugs changed (just hd a tune up in jan). Anyway now, when I put my foot on the gas to go, ut moves about 10 miles per hour. It shifts and then I can go fast, about 35 mph. When I make a stop, I have to sart again slow, I mean barely moving, take my foot off the gas, let it shift and then I can go about 35. I wont dare try to go on the interstate! Any suggestions. Oh, it's sometimes hard to start too. I have to turn the ignition to start, put my feet on the gas and then start the car. Please help!

Hi imnina,

Is the idling stable and can it be revved up?

Is any check light showing?

The overheating could have blown the head gasket or melted some sensors.

Hi imnina,

Yes, a faulty crank sensor can cause difficult starting and lack of power. Get it changed.
