10,000mi ago, the Fuel Pump was found to have failed after 4 attempts to diagnose the issue (car would not start, then would work again, then problem repeated). 10,000mi later at 63800mi, same symptoms occurred. Now diagnosis is Wiring Harness to Fuel Pump was deteriorated/worn so power was intermittent then finally disconnected.

Should the original mechanic (diagnosing and replacing the fuel pump)have checked the power supply and wiring at the time to catch this issue?

Would this type of power supply or wiring deteriorate that much in 10k Miles?

I would say that the mechanic should have checked the wiring harness before replacing the pump. I'n not saying the pump wasn't bad. However, as a mechanic, I always check power supplies first. Is it possible for the wiring to go bad in 10K? Yes, it is. It can go bad in 10 miles under the right conditions.

Thank you - I believe the pump WAS bad and was replaced accordingly. Unfortunately now 10k miles later, I have been informed the wiring harness has now gone bad. No severe inclement weather conditions during that 10k miles. The mechanic is charging more now. Cost for replacing the wiring harness at the time of the fuel pump replacement would have been minor, but now labor to go back in adds to the cost.
Should I argue this should have been caught at the time the pump was replaced or at least assist in the additional labor cost for this repair?
THank you again!

Honestly, if he hasn't removed the tank yet, I question how he knows it is the wiring harness. Regardless, you could try and hope he absorbs at least part of the labor. That is what I would try.
