Back in April, my car was overheating. The radiator, water pump, thermostat, and timing belt were replaced. Everything was fine until two weeks ago. It is overheating again! Coolant is leaking out of the car. When I took it back to the mechanic he said he couldn't find anything wrong. It still continues to overheat and leak. I also just changed the oil (the car was nearly empty of oil). I've purchased two bottles of coolant this month! Plus, when he "fixed" my car back in April, he broke the hood latch and now it is really hard to close securely. What is going on? And what are my rights?

I'm not sure where or how to check coolant. The check engine light came ona couple months ago and when checked it said that the number 2 O2 sensor was bad would that cause overheating?

It sounds like everything was replaced. Does the vehicle overheat when you are at highway speeds or only when in stop and go traffic? Where is the coolant leaking from?

As far as the hood latch, as a courtsey, I would have repaired it. If he broke it, I would ask for that.

Let me know.

O2 will not cause overheating. Need to take to a shop to have CO/ HC tests or go to NAPA they have block tester kit for $42.99

It started with me hearing boiling when I turned off the ignition. Then it progressed to the engine overheating while driving. I filled the radiator and plastic reserve tank with coolant. I was told the thermostat was stuck and I could drive without it so it was removed. There are no leaks. The fan is working. I can feel the car slightly "jerking" when it's starting to get too hot. The inside heater does not work anymore. I am a single woman and I am worried when I see a mechanic he will take advantage of me make unecessary repairs just for the money.

Although you could drive without a thermostat, it isn't a good idea. It's best if you have it replaced since it's relatively cheap (around $25 with gasket) and easy to install.

If the engine still overheats then it's a possibility your car may be getting false readings from the coolant temperature sensor which may be malfunctioning.

My car has been losing engine coolant very quickly and I'm not sure why. I filled the reservoir before taking a 2 hr trip and by the end of the trip, the coolant was half gone. A mechanic told me that he did not find any leaks and that he didn't know what the problem was. He suggested getting a flush but I'm not sure if that will help. When the car is low on coolant, it usually overheats in stop-and-go traffic. What do you think I should do?

Is there any evidence of coolant mixing with the engine oil? Also, is there white smoke coming from the exhaust?

Make sure you do not overfill the reservoir if you fill it above the level indicated it will just kick out the amount over the fill line.

Hi:
I haven't heard from you. I asked about the trans because the trans cooler is part of the radiator and if there is an internal problem, they can mix.

One last check I need you to do. With the engine cold, open the radiator cap and start the engine. Is there any pressure coming out or coolant being forced out?

Let me know.

Joe

Engine Cooling problem
2003 Dodge Stratus 4 cyl Automatic

My car overheated one day and we changed the thermostat and also one of the hose's had a leak so we cut off the part that had a hole and clamped it back on. My car does good when I am driving it but when I am parked or in traffic it starts to heat up and then even the red indicator light turns on and then when I start to drive or rev the engine it goes back to normal. What could be the problem?

Check your fans. They are not turning on when they are supposed to. Unplug the connector to the fans. Use jumper wires, connect the fan connectors directly to the battery. Do on both fans. If they work, your fan is good. Then check the fan relay in the relay box, next to your intake box. Try swapping a couple of relays around. You can also use the jumper wires to bypass the relay to see if the relay is at fault. If fans turn on, replace the temp sending unit.

The belt could be wrong or they forgot to reconnect something such as the plug to the fan and a vacuum hose for the low idle. Have them double check their work.
