Check that the wires are connected at the back of the starter. One big one that's hot all the time and one small one. With a test light, see if the small one's getting power when you turn the key to start. If not, check that the relay is working. You may be able to swap it with another relay in the fuse/relay box. Also, check all fuses. If swapping the relay doesn't help, we need to start checking the ignition switch. You could also have a faulty Neutral Safety switch. Turn the key to start and hold it there while you run the gear shift back and forth from drive to park. If it tries to start then, replace the safety switch on the transmission. Try that and get back with me. I like to know if I've been of any help.

I have a 2005 Buick Rendezvous that I am still paying for. It is driven by my daughter who has three small children. A week ago she came home at night. Her clicker to the security gate would not work. So she parked on the street. All seemed well she said accept when she had started it to head home it "growled" like she held the key too long. I went out to move the car. The car was completely powerless, NO Nothing. Since it was dark and stormy I left it on the street. Next day I tried to start it again. Same thing, no power at all. I had someone help me push it into the gate and he tried to jump it with his Jeep Cherokee. Nothing at all. It set for the whole week until my older daughter's husband came over with his Ford pickup with two batteries. He successfully jumpstarted it. All seemed in order, lights were not dim, the dash gages all seemed normal, all the radio presets were there but the gas gage was below empty and the low fuel light was on. He followed me to gas up and it died 2 times. He again jumped it and I made it home and this morning it started fine. Can you please help me? I have no money to get it diagnosed. Thank you.

It sounds like the alternator has failed check the voltage at the battery with the motor running. It should be around 14.5 volts.

If it is ok, the battery may be failing.

A diag is only 20 and well worth it.

It will be totally dead. Then it will start like all is well. Back on April 21, 2012 I asked for advice for this car. Back then it had been completely dead for over a week, would not even jump start, then my son-in-law jumped it, 3 times actually, in a short period. It has been completely fine until a couple of weeks ago. It began to intermittently refuse to start.

Totally dead, nothing. Then it will start like nothing had ever happened. The battery is good, the cables are tight, and I have no money to investigate any further. This is the car my daughter drives to transport three little kids. I would really appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks in advance.

You removed the battery cables from the battery and made sure the cables were clean? You also actually had the battery tested?

No to both questions. But the battery cables and posts are clean and tight as can be. Plus the battery is less than 2 years old. After a no-start episode the car will start perfectly, and repeatedly without having to do anything.
Also I forgot to mention, back in time before the initial no starting problem there was another weird happening. Normally the radio will stay on after the engine is shut off. Then when the doors are opened the radio turns off. For a short period of time the radio would not turn off when the driver door was opened. But, it would when any other door was opened. Around the time of the total power black out in April the door/radio issue resolved itself.

I luv my car but for the last 2 years I have had starting issues. At times doesn't matter cold or hot it won't start, I have to give it gas than slowly go off the gas. There have been a few times where I have had to use both the gas and brake when driving because as soon as I go off the gas it stalls out. Once it sits for a while its ok. I have had it at my mechanics many many times and he can't find the problem as it seems to start fine or him. Now a couple times it seems not to have power I can't get it to go over 60 km. This has only happened twice. I took it to my mechanic as soon as it happened but he hooked it up to his checker thing and it showed no faults! I luv my car but I'm at the point of getting rid of it if he can't find the issue as I have had to miss work a couple times because of this. Help!

I have had brand new batteries off the shelf be bad so test the battery. Also you say you dont have corroded cables but I have seen them look clean out the outside then take the cables off and find them corroded so lets start there.

The car started starting again so I took it to Pep Boys where I bought the battery less than 2 yrs ago. The battery was bad so they credited me $90 toward the new battery. So, for $38 we should be good! Thanks for all your help.
