Have been having issues with the car running out.

Have been having issues with the car running out of gas, but the gauge is showing that there is still fuel in the tank. Twice the car has run out of gas almost immediately after the low fuel light came on. Today, the gas gauge was showing a little less than 1/4 of a tank, yet it ran out of gas (in the rain with both my little kids in the car!)

What would cause the gas gauge to be inaccurate? Could the fuel pump be going out? I've never encountered this before.

Thanks in advance.

Chances are the float gauge in the fuel tank is going bad. Until it is fixed, keep track of the miles you are putting on the vehicle based on the number of gallons of fuel you get.

Thank you for your response.

So that means the fuel pump has to be changed? Is there any way to test it?
