Measure the battery voltage with the engine off and with it running.

Off should be near 12.6 volts fully charged. If you find closer to 12.0 volts, it's good but discharged. At 11 volts or less, suspect a shorted cell and the battery must be replaced.

At idle you must find between 13.75 and 14.75 volts. If it is higher than that, you'll need to measure the two voltages on the two small wires on the back of he alternator and we'll go from there.
