I have a 2005 monte carlo with starting problems, the car has about 85k miles and has been well taken care of, when the problem first started it when I turned the key nothing would happen and I would have to turn the key back and forth 3 or 4 times before the car would start soon after that started sometimes when I turned on the turn signal it would make a a loud sound and the lights would all flash so I tried not to use the blinkers but it did not do it every time just sometimes and as soon as it starting making the sound I shut the blinker off, I took the car to a grarge and they could not find anythign wrong and it would not make the sound and it started every time with no problems after a few weeks the starting problem got worse if I drove the car for more then 30 - 45 mins the car would not start for a couple hours. I took it to a differant grage and the car did make th sound with the blinker and they think it has to something to do with the flashers the button fibrates when it is making the sound and the car would not start and they think it is the igntion there are 2 parts in the ignation and they cost a lot and they are nto sure that is really the problem so I brought the car home and my husband talked to a few people and they told him to replace the sencers and we did and it did not help at all, now the car is not wanting to start and one day it stalled when I was driving and the car would not start had to wait a hour before it would start and now the car does not want to start I stopped driving car about 5 weeks ago and sometimes even with it sitting it stills will not start most of the time any idea what is wrong, I have read a lot of people have this problem but can not find any posts with how to fix it thank you

If its not a security issue-

**No crank at all/nothing/nada when key is engage to starting position

Could be a blown fusible link, the starter, starter relay, clutch switch/park and neutral switch/transmission position switch and ignition switch assuming the battery condition and connections are good. Note:If it doesn't apply disregard.

Hello everyone. Sorry I have to revive an old thread, but I found a fix for the intermittent no cranking.

I recently bought a 2005 Montw Carlo LT with a 3800 series 2. Test drove it, took it home, worked for days. (Summer days tho), and in September when it started getting a little colder, it wouldn't start/crank in the morning, but it would afternoon, when was hot outside.

After reading everything I found on the Internet, includin this site, I did what every newbie, unknowledgeable, back yard mechanic would do:

-Check wites for corrosion and looseness,

-Check and switch relays and fuses,

-Put a new battery in,

-Replaced the starter,

-Relearn all the keys and fobs,

-replaced a knock sensor as it was easy to do while I did the starter :)

And that's pretty much all. Would start fine 99% of the time in hot weather, but would not crank in the colder mornings (0 celsius or below). I suspected the parking safety switch and the ignition switch. This vehicle doesn't have the parking safety switch on the transmission, so I came to the conclusion it's mechanical in the center console, and I didn't want to pull that and the dash out, so I start playing with the key in the ignition switch, and. At times would start, at times it wouldn't.

After about one hour of wiggling and switching and playing, I realized I couldn't start the car when I turned the key all the way to Start position, but I could start it every time while switching the key from Accessories to On (almost close to On) position. I also learned that I can take the key out of the switch in every position, including with the car started, at it will stay running without a key, and also found out that I can switch the gear shifter (automatic) in any gear with the car on or off without pressing the brake pedal. So the previous owner went to a lot of bypassing safety to find the issue lol.

So technically, the issue is the ignition switch assembly, but at this point, knowing in what position I can start the car, I won't put any more money in it. Hopefully this new info will help someone with the same issues.
