Hello everyone. Sorry I have to revive an old thread, but I found a fix for the intermittent no cranking.
I recently bought a 2005 Montw Carlo LT with a 3800 series 2. Test drove it, took it home, worked for days. (Summer days tho), and in September when it started getting a little colder, it wouldn't start/crank in the morning, but it would afternoon, when was hot outside.
After reading everything I found on the Internet, includin this site, I did what every newbie, unknowledgeable, back yard mechanic would do:
-Check wites for corrosion and looseness,
-Check and switch relays and fuses,
-Put a new battery in,
-Replaced the starter,
-Relearn all the keys and fobs,
-replaced a knock sensor as it was easy to do while I did the starter :)
And that's pretty much all. Would start fine 99% of the time in hot weather, but would not crank in the colder mornings (0 celsius or below). I suspected the parking safety switch and the ignition switch. This vehicle doesn't have the parking safety switch on the transmission, so I came to the conclusion it's mechanical in the center console, and I didn't want to pull that and the dash out, so I start playing with the key in the ignition switch, and. At times would start, at times it wouldn't.
After about one hour of wiggling and switching and playing, I realized I couldn't start the car when I turned the key all the way to Start position, but I could start it every time while switching the key from Accessories to On (almost close to On) position. I also learned that I can take the key out of the switch in every position, including with the car started, at it will stay running without a key, and also found out that I can switch the gear shifter (automatic) in any gear with the car on or off without pressing the brake pedal. So the previous owner went to a lot of bypassing safety to find the issue lol.
So technically, the issue is the ignition switch assembly, but at this point, knowing in what position I can start the car, I won't put any more money in it. Hopefully this new info will help someone with the same issues.
