2004 Mercury Mountaineer Cars Gear Very Hard Pull Down Gear Doesn T Move

My cars gear is very hard to pull it down for the gear. Doesn't move smoothly. It works after several try then changing the gears smoothly. When you park and stop the engine the same problem - gear stiffness.

check for sand in linkage/cable. make sure to put brake on to let shift interlock release
