Oil leak

My car is leaking a lot of oil. What could be wrong.

There are dozens of possible causes. You're going to have to visually find the leak. You may have to clean it first. Check for a loose drain plug or loose oil filter. If those are good you may have blown a seal or oil pressure sending unit

It looks like my monterey is leaking from where the filter attaches. I think this is the pump. I would like to change it out, but autozone doesn't have that part. Do I have to go through a dealership? Does this sound like an accurate diagnosis. Oil is all over the filter, and the filter is tight.

How badly is it leaking? Does it leave a puddle or can you wait until the next oil change? I'd suspect the seam on the filter before a cracked housing. Also check for a double-gasket. That's when the old one sticks to the engine and goes unnoticed when you screw the new filter on. Most of the time the old gasket will blow out right away, but if the filter was really tightened, it's possible for them to stay in place. We've all double-gasketed a filter at one time or another.
