we replaced a bad alternator - started it up, test drove it - all is well - sat overnight - went to start it - it started but the symptoms started up again - lights slowly dimmed, wipers going very slowly - could the bad alternator do damage to the battery?

It would weaken the battery but if the charging is restored, the battery wuld rgain its power again, unless it is bad.

Since engine could be started, that would indicate the battery is good.
If the alternator is a remand or used unit, test its charging, it could be a bad alternator as well.
