What does it mean when the check fuel cap light comes on in a 2004 ford explorer?

It means the fuel cap was not tightened or was left off at some refueling stop, check the gas cap and then see if the light resets itself. The resetting process may take some time, or you could reset it with an OBDII scan tool. Also check the cap seal because they can break which means you will need s new gas cap.
