if oil is not getting to the valves why is thick smoke coming out the exhaust

oil not getting to the valves so i took off the oil pan cleaned the oil pump screen put every thing back to gether added 4.5 qts of oil checked the oil level was fine started the car thick smoke came out of the exhaust pipe and did not clear up shut off the engine checked the oil level the dip stick was dry i added 1 qt and the dip stick was still dry. why is the oil being burned if the oil pump is not working.its an 1.8 turbo. (help) thank you

check you turbocharger , remove the pipe and check the impeller for free play
