"Mess up" is not a technical term that I understand. What exactly is happening and how are the generators failing? Do you get any output at all? Have you measured battery voltage with the engine running? It must be between 13.75 and 14.75 volts. If that is okay, it's working at least partially. You need a professional load tester for the rest of the tests. That includes full-load output current and "ripple" voltage.
