how do you tell if a alternator is bad

2003 ford windstar 3.8 v6 the van starts then dies when you start it back up it runs for a minute then dies again. The battery light is on not sure if its the alternator or the fuel pump

start with a fuel pressure test. it sounds like you are on the track
