Have a 2003 Ford Explorer with 106k miles. When I slam on brakes - cars stops quickly but when I put my foot on the gas - nothing happnes like car is in neutral. Then in about 1-2 second - you hear a bang/slam and the transmision renegages in gear.. have had transmisison fluid checked - no problem. Could it be universal ball joints. if so - what are ballpark repairs for this job. Thanks,

A u-joint can make a clunk, but won't cause a delay as you described. Have the TCC checked. It is what disengages the torque converter clutch.
