My 02 Ford Windstar's check engine light just came on solid. The manual says this can happen when there's water in the gas tank, the gas cap isn't replaced properly or if low quality fuel is used. The cap was fine, it we're on a trip and I fueled up at a random station on the highway. The weather's also been dipping below freezing. Should I try a fuel additive or just give it a while after refueling?

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

The gas cap is just one new thing they added to a very long list of possibilities because so many people were leaving them loose causing fuel to evaporate into the atmosphere. Your mechanic will connect a scanner to read the stored diagnostic fault codes. That will lead him to the circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily the defective part. That is the starting point in the diagnostic procedure. There are so many things it could be, there are now three-digit fault codes instead of two-digit codes.
