2002 ford explorer. 6cyl 4.0 4wd. The top right pulley has play in the shaft. Took pulley off. What is the part that it is installed on? It has a line that runs in and out of a small radiator. Should there be play in the shaft and would this cause the oil to leak?

I was hearing a higher sounding noise in engine. Oil filter blew and I shut down right away.

love this site :-)

Here take your pick. Sounds like a steering line blew

So it would be the power steering pump. Should the shaft move in and out? I've blown two oil filters, not steering. Thanks

What would be a tell tale sign that the oil pump is not working without taking anything apart. The engine has to be removed to change the pump on this thing.

If you are blowing oil fiters, the pump would be putting out to much pressure. However if you are using on eof the cheap type filters, fram is one then switch to a purolator pure one or bosch or wix or napa. Napa you cna use sliver series.

The p/s pump shaft will move in and out a little but not enough where you would see it.

If it blew a wix then you probably have a stuck valve in the pump. You should only have a couple of thousandsths movement with ps shaft.

If you do not fix this excessive oil pressure problem you will also damage the rear mail oil seal, get the oil pressure checked to prove that this is the cause first.
