Serpentine belt replacement please

You need to measure for the belt length. Take that length to a parts store and they should be able to get the right size belt. Remember, with the belt off, the tensionier is fully extended. You need to have someone hold tension on it when measuring.

Thanks for your reply. It was towed into the shop where mechanic will not bother to measure it but offering AC compressor, evap. and condenser. coils replaced at $1,800.00 plus. If I can supply the belt, I might be able to convince him to install it. That is why I posted this hoping that someone know the belt number or measurement. Otherwise, we have to tow the car to another shop.

Just had to same problem recently. The belt size is 43" 6-groove. You may have to adjust alternator positioning to get belt nice and snug. This shorter belt size can be found at most auto parts stores. I think I picked mine up for $10.00 pretty cheap considering what the alternative costs. A new compressor and OEM size belt will run hundreds more. Hope this is helpful to someone in the future!

Four cylinder front wheel drive automatic 78,000 miles.

Belt broke. Cannot locate the tension-er. What looks like it should be the tension-er will not budge. I may be on the wrong pulley. Do I need a special tool or what and where is the cotton-picking thing?

1. Raise vehicle on hoist. 2. Remove right front wheel and belt splash shield. 3. Insert a 3/8" drive breaker bar into the square opening of the belt tension-er pivot bracket.

CAUTION:Avoid excessive force to over compress belt tensioner. This may result in damage to the belt tensioner.
4.Gently apply a force to rotate belt tensioner clockwise until the belt tensioner bottoms out and the belt can be removed from pulleys. See Fig. 11 and Fig. 12. 5.Remove belt. 6.Gently release tensioner.

I ran into the same issue with the AC compressor locking up on me on a 2004 2.7 liter model when I was out of town with limited tools. I tried unplugging the connector wire to disengage the clutch but the inside of the compressor had already seized and would not budge.

I was able to bypass the AC compressor as shown in the diagram above on the 2.7l with a 13/16" x 43-3/4"belt. Master Pro part number K060431.

I'm trying to replace serpentine belt, dont understand how to access the tensioner it's really buried, I found one nut on the front of it, loosened it, didn't do much, is there another one that has to be loosened?

To remove the belt, you need to move the tensioner away from the belt. It is spring loaded and hinges at its mount. You don't remove any bolts to do this. If access is an issue, remove the inner plastic panel inside the passenger side wheel well to access the side of the engine.

I've changed serpentine belts before on a GM cars and they are a snap, this is a mitsubishi engine, ive looked and I can't see how to get acess to the tentioner from the top or underneath the car. I've watched several videos, one looks like I have to loosen a belt on the pully, then another nut below the pully?

I'm not sure which one you have, but some do require that you loosen the alternator and there is an adjustment screw to loosen and tighten the belt. What looks like a tensioner pulley may in fact be an idler pulley. For some reason I can't open my diagrams to see and confirm what you are dealing with.

Yes, now that you mention it, the pulley does look like an idler pulley, Do all cars have a tension pully? I'm gonna have to pass this job on to a better mechanic, the other problem is that the tensioner on the alternator, is rusted and I think it's gonna break, I sprayed w d 40 on it to no avail. They may have to heat it up.

The other thing is that there are two belts on this car, serpentine and alternator.

There is only the alternator for a tensioner. There is a tension pully but it doesn't have any adjustment or spring tension. Remove the alternator guard by taking out two bolts. Loosen the pivot nut on the front of the alternator and loosen the adjusting bolt on the side of the alternator until the alternator is all the way back towards the engine. Slip the new belt on the alternator pulley, A/C pulley (if you have A/C) and craqnk pully, pay attention to the belt routing as indicated on the sticker on the hood! Slip on the idler pulley last and it will go right on. If your belt is too loose chances are you aren't following the correct belt routing. If you can't get the belt on you are not putting the idler on last.

Do you have a picture or series of pictures I can use to see how to replace the serpentine and alternator belts? Both need replacement and I cannot see how to get to them and which needs to come off 1st? I appreciate any help you can give.
