I have a terrible grinding noise under the hood

When the van is in gear. Once I put it in park it settles down. 2002 Chrysler town and country van

I took it in for oil change yesterday. the man said he heard it but didn't know what it was. said to run it for a while, wouldn't hurt anything. Sounds terrible.

I just had one like that would make a grinding noise while in drive you could hear it at idle.Turned out to be the alternator i actually think the noise was caused by the dampner on the alternator pulley.Listen with a long screw driver up to your ear see if the noise is coming from the alternator.Also listen to othere parts of the engine and transmission to narrow the noise down.Let me know what you find.
