The battery will run down while driving. GM went from the second best generator to the world's worst pile starting with the 1987 model year. It is common to need four to six in the life of the car. What many professionals are finding out is they can reduce the number of repeat failures by replacing the battery at the same time. The old battery will work fine in older cars, but as they age, they lose their ability to absorb and dampen voltage spikes that these new generators produce. Those spikes can interfere with the proper operation of the many computers on the car.
