Does the engine need removed to change the oil pump in a mercury sable 3.0 v-6

Yes your engine has to be removed. It is located at the front of the engine behind the timing cover. But there is no room inside the engine compartment to do this procedure. Maybe you could get to the pump by taking half of the engine compartment out, removing the wheel/rotor/strut/wheel well. But that's more work than just removing the engine.
