rough idle

2001 mazda b3000 rough idle, backfires, had flashing check engine light. changed plugs and wires, still idles rough , backfires, engine light out probably because i disconnected the battery. have not actually driven it since, afraid of killing it. could it be the coil pack? old plugs were clean, no oil, no carbon.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis,finding out what's going on.
