The transmission fluid looked burnt in my Lincoln town car limited 2001. It has a little over 200000 miles on it and the transmission would kinda stick every now and then. A friend told me I need to change the filter and change out the burnt fluid so that's what I had him do. Now my car is stuck in 1st gear. Was it a bad idea to change out the fluid causing more harm than good?

It shouldn't have hurt it. The old theory is if the fluid is really dirty, when changed, the new fluid with its fresh cleaners will cause the trans to slip. That isn't what is happening here. Has the check engine light come on? Also, when the trans was serviced, could any of the shift solenoids been touched or disconnected?
