It's more likely that the replacement stereo was wired in by cutting OEM wires. It's possible that the start wire was cut and reconnected poorly. Poor wiring like that causes a lot of problems.
Next would be poor cable connections from the battery to the starter, or the used starter may have failed.
Another thing could be a bad transmission range sensor, try putting the car in neutral and starting it, also wiggle the shifter while it's in neutral as you try to start it. If it starts in neutral or while you wiggle the shifter the range switch is failing.
