Alright so a month ago I had cleaned the valve cover on my car, I did it while I was changing the spark plugs and now there is oil build up around the bottom of the valve cover and on top where the bolts go that hold the cover on again. The plugs are fine just so you know, just wondering if I need to replace the gasket and the grommets. And the transmission also has engine oil basically built up all around it, what would be the safest way to clean off the oil that's built up on it over time?

It sounds like the valve cover is leaking. Start by replacing that gasket. As far as cleaning the engine, get a good engine cleaner product and just follow the directions on the can. I would recommend doing it at a car was where there is high pressure water to clean it.
