Trouble starting but only intermittently - Fuel pump?

Truck randomly has trouble starting. (Randomly = approx every 40 starts or so, I just find myself stranded somewhere unable to start motor) If I leave it sit for about 40 minutes, it has eventually started again. So this might just be a problem when engine is hot. I can hear starter motor; that seems to be working as it does crank the engine but within seconds truck shakes and dies out. Pumping gas pedal seems to do nothing. Feels as if engine is not getting gas at all.

A few more points:
1)It seems to be using much more gas than normal.
2)I've recently changed battery and had it rechecked. Battery is good.
3)Once truck is started, it runs pretty good on street but on freeway sputters every now and then.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi thanks for response. Took it to mechanic. Didn't have any work done, but he did check the under dash codes and it didn't show anything wrong. Fuel filter was changed about a year ago. Mechanic didn't think the filter was causing the problem but I don't know. I'll probably try that anyway. To replace fuel filter, i've been quoted in the $600 range. Any more ideas on what it might be?

Check the resistance int eh cam and crank sensors. Sometimes they get high and won't allow a start, especially when hot they also wont' set acode this way either.

I'll mention this to the mechanic. I plan to take it in later this week. Thanks for your help.

Is there a way to positively rule out that it's the fuel pump?
