I have a 2001 Chevy Tahoe. It is sometimes impossible to shift out of park. I replaced the switch assembly on the brake pedal. It still does it sometimes. The brake lights work fine.
what else would cause this?

The brake light switch sends power to the park lock solenoid. The only other things could be a wiring issue or the solenoid itself needs replaced.

I did confirm that the solenoid is defective and have purchased a replacement. I managed to remove the old solenoind unit but am having a difficult time getting the new one installed. Is there a trick to getting the two sockets to fit into the mounting pins? I can get the front one in but can't seem to get enough pressue to get the rear socket mounted.

What I can tell you is this. Make sure the tilt wheel is in the center position and the shifter is in neutral. When you removed it, you would have had to pry the actuator from the mounting pin on the steering column jacket assembly and the outer shift cable ball stud on the cable shift cam. It goes together the opposite same way. There is no trick. It requires the pressure to attach. Also, make sure everything is lining up for you. You can press on the lock adjuster block to compress the internal adjusting teeth and disengage the adjuster teeth. That may be keeping you from getting things lined up for you.

Once it is in place, it needs adjusted. Place the shifter in park. Turn the ignition to the off position and remove the key. Using park lock cable pliers (j-41396)unlock the ring on the cable assembly. Pull on cable until the cable touches the gear shift lever. Release cable. Using park lock cable pliers, lock aduster ring in place.

I hope this helps. Let me know
