Chances are your system uses vacuum controls to run the mode motors, and vacuum has been lost. Look under the hood for a small hard plastic vacuum hose going through the firewall that's cracked or pulled apart. Most systems are spring-loaded to go to defrost mode for safety when vacuum is lost. Your feet might freeze but your windshield will be clear.
