I just bought 01 malibu a week ago and this morning the theft system prevented it from startin I did the key thing where you leave key in the on position til light goes off and it started I was wondering if it is ignition switch or the ignition itself and how costly is it to fix?

It could be many things that caused the problem. The bad news is a dealer is the only place that has the proper test equipment to diagnose a problem with the security system. I hate to say it, but you need to take it to a dealer.
