Key wont turn 1997 Malibu

is the key to the right of the steering colum like in the dash not the colum itself. Thats how my 2000 malibu is and I have the same deal with it. I find holding the key up, so like the upper notches of the double sided key dig in helps and/or turn the key over and upward thing.
