Is it possible to change the key lock cylinder for the ignition by myself, I am just wondering if it is possible and if there would be any problems that I could run into while doing it, thanks

It isn't too hard and only requires a few common tools. However, it may take a little time.

Tools:
7mm socket / ratchet
8mm wrench
Small flat screwdriver
Small punch.

Using the 8mm wrench, disconnect the neg battery terminal

Turn the key to the run position

Remove the cig lighter

Remove ash tray

Make sure park brake is on and place shifter in neutral

Gently pull on the trim below the ash tray to remove the plastic trim. You may need a small flat screwdriver to get it started.

Using the 7mm socket, remove the 3 bolts holding the radio in place

Disconnect antenna and wiring to rear of radio

Remove radio

On the side of the plastic casing which holds the tumbler / cylinder, there is a rectangular opening. Take a small punch, place it in that opening, and gently press.

At the same time, gently pull on the key to remove the tumbler / cylinder

Once removed, the cylinder / tumbler is inside a metal housing. Look closely on the back side to identify two securing points and press to release the cylinder

Reverse the procedure to replace the unit.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you run into problems. Also, this same procedure is used from 1999 to 2003 Malibu vehicles, so your vehicle should be the same.
