2001 Chevrolet Corvette Grinding gears while downshifting

I've been wanting to upgrade my clutch for some time now and I'm in the process of choosing one with the best stock pedal feel, Max HP rating, and least amount of chatter. Here is the problem I'm currently running into. Awhile back, my gears started to grind as I downshifted to 1st gear at a slow roll (like when approaching a red light) As a little more time passed. (Maybe 1000 to 2000 miles) I noticed the same grinding sound as I slowed down and downshifted into 2nd gear. So in my mind I'm figuring, I need to upgrade this clutch ASAP before something worse happens. (Most of the time the car sits in the garage and is basically a Sunday driving car not an everyday car). So I call my mechanic who specializes in every year corvette. He is telling me that I not only should change out the clutch but it sounds like my transmission is about to go.(I had a trans go in one of my mustangs and when it went it was one second cruising and the next was CLANG CLANG and every gear was gone except for 4th gear. This is my first Corvette and Maybe their setup is a little different from Fords or the other cars that I have owned that were manual transmissions.

So the BIG question is do you think that it is the Clutch being so worn out that it will not catch enough when downshifting or do you think it's the transmission itself slowly slowly breaking down the Synchros and causing the gears to grind? Any information on this subject will be greatly appreciated.I know the trans will be out when they do the clutch anyways but to put a better (heavier duty transmission that can handle more power) it's going to cost (Ballpark figure from my mechanic) an extra $2,600. So if it's really not the trans it would be great to know.

Thank you to anyone that can help.

I do have some car knowledge and know more than your average guys but there are 4 things I stay away from. Internal transmission components, internal engine components, some more complex suspension systems, and 4x4 transfer cases.

The transmission is beefy enough for that car, I agree with the mechanic, sounds like the schyncro is going out in the trans not the clutch. Or it 's a shift fork problem but you won't know until it'sapart.
