Grand AM 2000, 3400 engine with 131000 miles. Got a full tank of gas from a Gulf station in Buffalo. Drove for about 90 miles and then the problem started. While driving on Highway at 55 miles/hour, the engine stopped. Pulled over and waited cor couple of minutes and started again. Ran for about a miles and engine stopped again. This happened 5 or 6 times, but every time it would run for lesser distance and quit. Got the car towed to garage. The mechanic said that battery and alternator were original and need to be changed and it was done. When I picked up the car, it ran on highway for about 15 miles and same thing happened again. The car will start but run for a short distance and quit. Please help.

Sounds like a contaminated fuel problem, take the filter off and drain it, see if there is muck in the fuel.

Thanks for the response. Is taking the filter out a major job? Can you give me some instructions?
If the fuel was was contaminated, would the the problem not occur right away. The problem started after I filled up the tank and drove about 80 to 90 miles.
I have added gasline antifreeze and fuel injector cleaner to the tank, but the problem still occurred.
What are other possible reasons for this problem?

Normally it takes a while for the filter to clog up enough to cause a problem, so this is quite feasible, I will have to look at the filter system on this model, it should not be to hard, but as we do not have these cars in Australia, I will have to check that out.
