I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand-Am (4-cyl, Auto). For the last month or so, since getting an oil change from a company whose name I will withhold, I have had problems with my car cutting off, mainly on the highway, a few times in the city while driving. The car will run fine and then just shut off, causing me to lose all power steering and control. Before the car cuts off, it begins to sputter (for lack of a better word) and then all the dash dials (speedometer, rpms, gas gauge) go to zero. This usually happens when I am going a constant speed, with my foot providing consistent pressure to the accelerator. I can feel the car losing speed and the accelerator fails to work right before the car shuts off. The car fails to restart for about 5 to 10 minutes and when it finally does, my ETS (Electronic Traction System?) Light stays on until I shut the car off again, and the ETS does not work until I shut the car off again. I am assuming this is an electrical problem, but I really do not know. Help me please. I cannot go visit my mother 15 miles away because I am afraid the car will cut off on the highway again, creating a dangerous situation for my 2 small children and I.
