Alternator inner parts not spinning

Hi all,
I removed the old alternator and installed a new one, same model numbers, amperage, sub-model numbers, etc. When we jump the battery, the engine starts, the serpentine belt spins, the outer wheel of the new alternator spins but the inner part of the alternator does not spin. Why? The van completely quit working; locks didn't work, windows didn't work, gauges failed. And that may have damaged the PCM? I checked all the ACC fuses in all three fuse boxes and none of them are damaged, so I don't think this is a wiring harness (alternator to engine fuse box) problem, but there was some white residue on the end of the plastic part that connects to the four prongs on the alternator. The nut installed on the harness that ends in a metal o-ring might not be conductive. Would that cause this problem? Please don't say it s a defective alternator.

Hello,

Okay, the white residue on the alternator connector is known as corrosion. At the auto parts store you can purchase a can of QD Electronic Cleaner manufactured by CRC. This cleaner is specifically designed to clean automotive electrical connectors. Spray liberally on both the alternator electrical connector and the vehicle's wire harness connector that goes to the alternator. Make sure they are both spotless before connecting back together. You can also purchase some dielectric grease at the auto parts store and apply some to the connectors as well. It is grease that conducts electricity and should help the corrosion from returning. Please get back to us with how everything turns out.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks so much, SCWICKEDSTANG! We followed your advice. The van starts with a jump to its battery but the inner parts of the alternator are still not spinning. Is it possible that the harness that has a metal o-ring ending? If that had a nut that wasn't conductive, could that be casing the problem?

Hello again,

No. If the alternator isn't spinning then the bearing is frozen up in the alternator and the alternator itself will have to be replaced. In the diagrams down below I have included the factory directions for the removal and installation of your vehicle's alternator. Please go through this guide and get back to us with what you are able to find out.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks SCWICKEDSTANG! Will do and let you know. I'm cursing Home Depot for selling a defective alternator. Is the bearing something I may have somehow damaged during installation?

Hello again,

Absolutely not. It is an internal part in the alternator that the shaft the pulley is attached to goes through the middle of. Just about any rotational part will have a bearing in it. I would take the alternator back to where you purchased it and have them replace it under warranty. This would be a mechanical failure, covered by warranty.

Thanks,
Alex
