when taking out the alternator, do you have to remove anything else to snake it out? My son is at home trying to do this while I'm here at work and he says he can't get the alternator out - it is completely disconnected but there are things blocking it from getting it out from the top or dropping it out the bottom. Help? (Thanks in advance)

Thanks KHLow2008,
When I got home and played and pondered, I saw that I just had to remove the plastic power steering reservoir, the reservoir mounting bracket and disconnect the reservoir hose at the power steering pump in order to move that stuff out of the way to clear a path for the alternator to come out (an A/C hose passes over all this and is the main thing prohibiting extraction). Job done - now I need a new battery!

Why do you need a new battery?

If it had been drained flat, recharging it would work. Use a jumper and let the engine charge it back.

I'm assuming the battery is bad - my wife is getting it checked out today at Costco where we bought it 3 years and 1 month ago (naturally, 1 month past the "full replacement" warranty!). I bought a charger and charged it overnight, but I don't think it took a charge because when I started the van after the alternator replacement, it didn't crank real strong, so I shut it off within a couple minutes because I heard you can ruin an alternator with a bad battery. So, to be cautious, I pulled out the battery and the wife is taking it to Costco to get it checked out and hopefully they'll give us a good pro-rating on a new battery if in fact it checks bad.

I just replaced the timing, and other belts on my van. I also installed a new battery. When I crank the motor its makes a squeeling sound and a burning smell comes from the alternator area and will not start. If the alternator is bad will the car not start?

You just changed the belts now the car wont start, correct. Alot of times I find that a pulley is reinstalled wrong causing it to seize. I would start by disconnecting belt and try to move every pulley and see if something is stuck. Check back to us.

Guess the age of the battery is catching up.

Might as well get it replaced.

Have a nice day.

That was the first thing I did, I checked all the pulleys. And there is a burning smeel coming from that area. Could that be the alternaotr and would the car not start of the alternator is bad?

The alternator probably did not go bad because you changed the belts. Is burning smell is present with all the belts off? If for some reason you damaged the alternator when changing the belts, it will still run if it is disconnected.

No matter what I do, I can't get the %$$## new alternator installed. It looks exactly like the old one. There is only 2 bolts, but I can't get both in, it seems to be hitting the timing cover above.
How do I but the belt on and get this thing installed?

Hi mistersq,

The belt is installed after the alternator has been mounted and not before.

I do not understand why you are not able to install the alternator unless it is not of the correct type.

ALTERNATOR
Removal
1 . Ensure you have the anti -theft code for the radio and the navigation system. Write down the
frequencies for radio's preset buttons.

2 . Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and disconnect positive cable.

3 . Remove the alternator/compressor belt.

4 . Disconnect the alternator 4 -pin connector and Black wire "B" from the alternator.

5 . Remove the mounting bolt "A" and alternator bracket mounting bolt "B". Remove harness
clamp"C" from alternator bracket.

Installation
1 . Install in the reverse order of removal.

2 . Enter the anti -theft code for the radio and navigation system. Enter the customer's radio station presets.

3 . Perform the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) idle learn procedure, and power window control unit reset procedure.

4 . Set the clock.
