I have a 2000 Ford Focus and the shifter button doesnt go in I think its stuck what should I do?

When you step on the brake does the brake lights come on?Can you hear a clicking in the center console area when stepping on the brake?Also any blown fuses or codes?Do you have a multimeter to do some testing?
