Almost every small car engine today develops leaking head gaskets sooner or later that requires removal of the cylinder head anyway, and that is somewhat common, so the only additional cost for you would be for the new valves if any are bent. A head gasket with a valve job could run in the area of $1500.00 to $2000.00, or about the same as five monthly payments on a new car. To do that job the timing belt would have to be removed too so the only additional cost would be for the new belt. Those are ballpark numbers. Please don't be angry with your mechanic if he quotes higher prices. Some engines are harder to disassemble and put back together than others.
If you like the car, I would rather see you fix it vs. Buying something newer. If you read through the things people post here, you will see how many people are having expensive problems due to all the silly computers on the newer cars.
