I've been daily driving the car listed above for about 3 months now. It has about 170,000 miles on it and really has had no problems up until now. I've also kept up on maintaining it, having gotten oil change less than a month ago by a mechanic friend of mine.

Now the problem, last Friday. I was using my car not exactly how it was supposed to be used... As a racing car of sorts... (you could probably guess). Really though it wasn't anything more than stomping on the gas and going from 60 MPH to 80 (I've done much worse when I first got it). After this little adventure of mine I returned to driving like a sane individual. But that is really all beside the point. About five miles give or take down the road it stalled on me on the side of the highway and started some really mean knocking. I was able to turn it back on and drive it into a parking lot where it sat for about five minutes then it started making some mean noises (knocks and whines, refer to video) and completely shut off on me. Turning the key did nothing but give a click and try to turn over every once in a while. The battery and such still worked, but I tried a couple jumps just to try it out.

I've tried it every day until now and still nothing, but today I topped off the gas tank and it started right up for me. The knocks and whines prevail on me though.

I'm really not sure what the problem may be, I believe it may be my alternator (the entire day prior to my car stopping I noticed my dash lights going out and brake pedal harder to press), my mechanic friend thinks I blew a rod, and my brother thinks it's my starter or harmonic balancer.

The sounds coming from it are pretty hard to describe, but I was able to find a YouTube video with the exact sound as mine. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koK_fbL6uQw)

Any advice? I've started it up and let it run to try and locate where the sound is coming from, but I still haven't tried driving it out of fear of making it worse, though I'm worried that it may be too late already.

Hi,

Do me a favor. Remove the serpentine belt and inspect all the pulleys. Make sure there are none that are difficult to turn, have play, or are damaged.

If you find nothing wrong with them, start the engine with it off to see if the noise is gone. Do not run it long at all. Only run it long enough to see if the sound is gone.

Let me know the results.

Take care,

Joe
