My front differential is going out in my 99 mercury mountaineer and I want to know if I can just unhook the drive shaft?

WITH ALL WHEEL DRIVE. PROBABLY NOT. REGULAR 4X2/4X4 YOU COULD, 'COURSE IT WOULDN'T MATTER BECAUSE IN 4X2 THE FRT SHAFT WOULD BE DISENGAGED ANYWAY.

EVEN SO, UNLESS THE WHEELS ARE DISENGAGED FROM THE AXLE--THE DIFF WOULD STILL TURN AS YOU TRAVELED

I HAVE HEARD OF KITS FOR SOME VEHICLES, THAT SORTA TRANSFORMS THEM INTO "TRADITIONAL SYSTEMS". NO, I DON'T KNOW, INVESTIGATE 4WD AUTO PARTS SITES. SORRY!
