How would someone know if the timing belt broke on a 1999 Hyundai Elantra? Lost all power on free way and trying to find out what the problem is. Have been told it is the timing belt. What other things could have caused the loss of engine power?

Was the cam belt ever changed? At 224k miles it should have bben changed several times. Removal of the valve cover should shed some light on the problem. Get that off and crank the engine over to see if the cam spins, if not then the belt has been snapped.
