The gas gauge dropped to zero

My '99 ford taurus stopped during a turn and the gas gauge dropped to zero but jumpped right back on and the gas gauge rose again

Hello,

This is likely due to an intermittent issue with the fuel level sending unit
The fuel level sending unit is a part of the fuel pump assembly. It consists of a float and a resistor panel. As the fuel level changes the float moves with it and contact different spot on the resistor panel. This gets translated into the fuel level at the gauge.
The resistor panel can burn out over time and that will give incorrect fuel level reading.

In order to replace the level sensor, the fuel pump needs to be removed. This will require dropping the fuel tank from the vehicle.
