You did replace the timing chain? What is the vehicle doing when you try to start it?

If it sounds like it is trying to start, I would recheck the timing to make sure it isn't off. Since it sounds normal, you must be really close. Also, if the timing is correct, check to make sure the fuel pump pressure is within the manufacturer's specs and make sure it has a good hot blue snapping spark to the plugs.

Are you certain that the timing chain was put on correctly? If so, place the engine at TDC and check to make sure the distributor rotor is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. From there, making sure you know which way the distributor rotates, recheck the plug wires to make sure they are correct.

HOWEVER, that fact that you smell gas makes me think you may not be getting spark to the plugs. Recheck that to make sure it has a blue snapping spark at the plugs.

Joe
PS: Is there any chance that the timing wasn't correct when you installed the timing chain?
