1999 Dodge Durango stuck in 4WD

I went mudding and my durango wouldn't come out of 4wheel drive so tried putting it in 4wd and then taking it out of gear it didn't come out then I had to go home and 15 mins and an interstate later the truck starts smoking from fluid leak from a line that that goes to front diff. Black hose with white plastic cap on it trying to find out what's going on with it could I still drive it

Is it out of 4wd? The hose you mention is the vent for the differential. My guess is that water got into the differential and it is now over full. Check that first. If there is water mixes, you need to drain, clean and refill it. On the other hand, if you were driving at high speeds in 4wd, that can also build excessive pressure in the diff causing the problem.

OK got it out of 4wd is it safe to drive in 2wd until I change the diff fluid.

Make sure there is no water mixed with the gear oil in the front diff. If there is, most likely bearing damage will occur.
