I have a 1999 Chevy Lumina with 142k. This past week I was driving up a mid-grade hill when the car suddenly sputtered and died at speed. After several tries I was able to restart the car and continued driving on and off for the next 2 hours while I delivered pizza. The next day I noticed a mild tapping noise proportional to the engine rpms that I assumed was a noisy lifter, however I was a little concerned considering the stall out the previous day. I checked my oil levels and they were acceptable. I then attempted to drivea 20 mile distance on the freeway and the car again stalled at speed, this time I noticed the little oil drip can light come on and recognized that the engine sounded terrible. I had to restart the car in order to get it far enough off the dangerous section of highway I had stalled at and while it started puttered weekly it sounded like their was no oil in the upper engine. I then had the car towed home. There is no oi or coolant leak. I called a shop and described the problem and they told me that to loose that much oil pressure without loosing oil meant something pretty terrible had likely gone wrong in the engine and that they didn't feel like it would be worthwhile for me to fix it. Do you agree or can you provide an alternative perspective?
